21. April 2022 – On 15 April 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported the first outbreaks of acute hepatitis in children in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The cause is still unclear. Since then, the number of reported cases has steadily increased. For the WHO, it is conceivable that children are now more susceptible to adenoviruses because during the pandemic, these pathogens have been transmitted less. The hypothesis that dual infections with adenoviruses and the coronavirus could play a role is also being investigated. However, the WHO rules out hepatitis as a side effect of Covid vaccinations, as the vast majority of young hepatitis patients had not been vaccinated.
