Outpatient before inpatient: shift trend confirmed

26. Mai 2022 – The shift from inpatient to outpatient care is taking place. This is the conclusion of an evaluation carried out by the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP) on behalf of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Since January 2019, the costs of six groups of medical interventions will only be reimbursed by the compulsory health insurance (obligatorische Krankenpflegeversicherung, OKP) if they are performed on an outpatient basis. Costs for insurers are stable, while they are falling for the cantons. The authors of the evaluation recommend that the Federal Government and the cantons harmonise the list of outpatient interventions. The service providers should take account of the shift from inpatient to outpatient care by adapting their infrastructure and processes.
