Meeting highlights from the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) 8-11 July 2024

19. Juli 2024 – The European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) safety committee (PRAC) recommended measures to minimize the risks of aspiration and pneumonia in patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists during surgery. These diabetes and obesity treatments slow gastric emptying, increasing aspiration risk. Patients are advised to inform doctors about their use of these medicines before surgery, and product information will be updated.
The committee also found that glatiramer acetate, used for multiple sclerosis, can cause anaphylactic reactions even years after treatment begins. A direct healthcare professional communication (DHPC) will inform professionals to discontinue the medicine if such reactions occur.
